Accepted name and source opinion
Kew POWO accepts Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus with the author citation (Lem.) K.Schum.; its native range is northeastern Mexico in desert or dry-shrubland context.1 IPNI remains separate evidence for nomenclatural publication and basionym details.2 POWO gives a first-publication statement in the 1897 Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien supplement; IPNI records the accepted combination in Botanische Jahrbücher on 12 April 1898. The 1897/1898 place-and-date difference is explicit. The difference stays source-attributed in metadata rather than being collapsed into an invented reconciliation.
Placement and identification
Ariocarpus is an accepted genus in the Cactoideae–Cacteae context of Cactaceae.3 The species node owns only its direct Ariocarpus parent; order, family, subfamily and tribe nodes are not recreated. A low body capable of remaining partly embedded, triangular tubercles and a woolly central groove or areole zone are characteristic; flowers emerge from the crown.
Identification cannot rely on flower colour or one product photograph. Tubercles, epidermis, areoles, spines, flowers, fruits, the thickened root and reliable provenance should be evaluated together. Grafting, heavy feeding, low light and warm winters can alter body proportions without automatically changing scientific identity.
Synonymy and canonical boundary
Kew lists 22 synonyms: two homotypic names plus historical names around albiflorus, elephantidens, neotulensis, skarupkeanus, sladkovskyi, tulensis and macdowellii. Homotypic names share one nomenclatural type, while heterotypic names can be based on different historical types. They support search and literature retrieval but do not create separately accepted species routes.
A. agavioides, A. fissuratus and other accepted Ariocarpus species are not synonyms. Related species, commercial clones, colour selections and product labels are excluded unless the maintained source treats them as synonyms. This prevents SEO pressure from merging species or publishing former subordinate ranks as new canonical routes.
Range and conservation
The body can remain cryptic on open calcareous or mineral-rich ground. POWO records the native range as northeastern Mexico.1 This does not describe commercial production, and nursery availability is not evidence that wild populations are secure.
The IUCN-linked target is NT; the former live value was CR.4 The correction belongs only to the botanical conservation field, not product eligibility, legal trade or inventory.
Production ownership
The source defines only the target taxonomy node and linked botanical editorial fields. Product copy, price, stock, SKU, images, variants, categories, common names, slugs and the product-to-botanical link remain protected. A placeholder botanical image is not replaced in this batch.
