What kind of cactus is Astrophytum ornatum?

Astrophytum ornatum is a natural species from north-eastern Mexico to Veracruz, recognized by strong ribs and prominent spines and capable of becoming columnar with age. The species has one of the more distinctive appearances in the genus through a strongly ribbed stem that can elongate with age, prominent and usually strongly spined areoles along the rib crests, variable white flecking, and yellow flowers. Historical names such as glabrescens or mirbelii are not automatic identities for a modern potted plant. Native habitat and ecological context

The verified native range is north-eastern Mexico to Veracruz.1 POWO records the species as a succulent subshrub of desert and dry-shrubland biomes. Cultivation should provide fast oxygen return to the root zone, a controlled wet-dry cycle, and sufficient light rather than copying a landscape as decoration.

The 2015 plastid phylogeny placed Ornatum samples in the same principal clade as Myriostigma but on a separate species branch. Yellow flowers and apical fruit dehiscence are interpreted in that context; visual similarity does not merge canonical names. Stem colour, spine density, offsetting, and flowering time vary among living specimens; a product photograph alone is neither a scientific diagnosis nor a record of a wild population.

Safety and conservation

The best-supported household concern is mechanical injury from the spines rather than a claim of chemical toxicity. Restrict access for children and pets. The current Kew/IUCN-backed category is Vulnerable, so the former live LC value should be corrected to VU. Widespread cultivation does not remove responsibility for habitat protection and legal provenance.
