The accepted lineage is Lithops → Ruschieae → Ruschioideae → Aizoaceae. The species is a succulent subshrub native from Botswana to South Africa. Most of the plant remains at or below the substrate surface, leaving the patterned upper leaf windows exposed.

Synonymy and canonical boundary

The batch carries six Kew synonyms: Mesembryanthemum ferrugineum Dinter & Schwantes; Mesembryanthemum lesliei N.E.Br.; Lithops lesliei var. hornii de Boer; Lithops lesliei var. minor de Boer; Lithops lesliei var. venteri de Boer & Boom; Lithops venteri (de Boer & Boom) Franczak. These names provide historical nomenclatural access to the accepted species and do not create separate products or accepted nodes.

The historical name Lithops lesliei subsp. burchellii is excluded. The current backbone associates it with separately accepted Lithops burchellii. Neither that accepted taxon nor its conservation context may be merged into L. lesliei.

Range and global conservation

The native range extends from Botswana into South Africa in desert and dry shrubland settings. Widespread cultivation cannot be used as evidence for the condition of wild populations.
