Accepted name and publication history

The accepted name in the current Kew backbone is Cereus aethiops Haw.. Adrian Hardy Haworth published the species in 1830 in Philosophical Magazine and Annals of Chemistry, new series 7: 109–110. IPNI supplies nomenclatural authorship and place of publication, while current acceptance, synonymy, and native distribution follow POWO's taxonomic opinion.12

The name was published directly in Cereus, with no parenthetical basionym author. Piptanthocereus aethiops is a later homotypic generic combination.

Taxon boundary and infraspecific treatment

In the Kaktüs Doktoru backbone, the species is a child of the genus Cereus. Kew lists no accepted subspecies or variety; subordinate names related to landbeckii and melanacanthus are treated within species synonymy. This package updates only the canonical species node and its linked botanical-dictionary record; it does not flatten accepted subordinate ranks into species synonyms, rewrite the genus node, or alter the product.

Diagnostic characters

The species belongs to a southern-cone Cereus complex associated with bluish-green to dark epidermis, pronounced ribs, and dark spines. Historical names such as “azureus”, “coerulescens”, “melanacanthus”, and “nigrispinus” sharing one synonym surface show that stem blueness or spine darkness alone does not define the species. These characters must be assessed together. A product photograph is not an herbarium voucher, and cultivation may alter stem colour, spine density, and growth direction.

Phylogenetic context

The 2023 genus-level phylogeny investigated relationships within Cereus with hundreds of captured nuclear orthologues and a coalescent framework, demonstrating why traditional appearance-based circumscriptions require genomic testing.3 A 2025 family-wide phylogenomic study then reassessed the Cactaceae backbone and classification using hundreds of nuclear genes.4 These studies do not by themselves rename this species; they warn against inferring close relationship from one conspicuous stem or spine character.

Native distribution and conservation

Kew records the native range as Uruguay and north-eastern, north-western, and southern Argentina.1 POWO records the species across subtropical Uruguay and a broad north-to-south Argentine range. Population variation in temperature, rainfall, stem colour, and spination should therefore be expected rather than compressed into one “black” or “blue” retail label. The stored conservation category is LC.5 The IUCN layer exposed through WFO reports Least Concern. That category applies to the broad species concept and does not imply that local habitat loss, population differences, or collection pressure are absent.

Synonymy and retrieval

Kew accepts 17 synonyms at the species node: Piptanthocereus aethiops is homotypic; species, varietal, forma, and generic combinations around azureus, coerulescens, landbeckii, melanacanthus, and seidelii form the 17-name surface. These are not canonical routes; they document nomenclatural history and support retrieval of older literature. WFO may expose a broader historical set, but the importer uses the exact current 17-name POWO list and does not blindly duplicate orthographic or nomenclatural variants.1
