Glassy-Spined Mammillaria
Mammillaria schiedeana is a Mexican species native from Guanajuato to Veracruz, recognized by fine radial spines and three accepted subspecies. The species can be recognized by a small globose or short-cylindrical stem, numerous fine radial spines on distinct tubercles, fewer central spines, pale flowers, and conspicuous mature fruits. Stem and spine appearance varies among subspecies, so one commercial photograph cannot define the species boundary. The verified native range is Mexico from Guanajuato to Veracruz.1 POWO records the species as a succulent subshrub of desert and dry-shrubland biomes. Wet roots during cool weather are generally more dangerous than controlled dry coolness.
