Spegazzini's Cereus
Cereus spegazzinii is a succulent shrub of seasonally dry regions from Bolivia through Paraguay to Mato Grosso do Sul, often branching at ground level with decumbent shoots. WFO and Flora do Brasil describe stems branching at ground level, often with decumbent or spreading shoots, green to glaucous epidermis, and usually 3–5 ribs. The flower tube is smooth and the fruit greenish to pinkish with deciduous perianth remnants. The verified native range is Bolivia, Paraguay, west-central Brazil, and north-eastern Argentina.1 POWO treats the species as a succulent shrub of seasonally dry tropical biomes. Its decumbent or ground-level branching habit shows that not every Cereus species must form one strictly upright column. Cultivation should not imitate a landscape as decoration; it should provide fast oxygen return to the root zone, a controlled wet-dry cycle, and strong light.

A tall plant raised under lower light should not be moved abruptly into harsh sun; increase exposure over several weeks. Wet roots during cool weather are generally more dangerous than controlled dry coolness.
Do not use a fixed-day calendar. During active growth, water thoroughly only after the mix has dried throughout and let every excess drain away. Drying slows during cool or low-light periods, so watering naturally becomes less frequent. Use a coarse, mineral-forward, airy, fast-draining mix and prevent moisture accumulation where decumbent shoots contact the pot surface.
Ground-level branching and decumbent growth are compatible with the species; identification should not assume every plant is a single upright column. The synonym Cereus anisitsii must also remain distinct from Gymnocalycium anisitsii. Stem colour, branching, spine density, and flowering time vary among living specimens; a product photograph alone is neither a scientific diagnosis nor a record of a wild population.
The best-supported household concern is mechanical injury from the spines rather than a claim of chemical toxicity. Tall columnar plants also require protection against tipping and weight-related injury. The IUCN assessment is Least Concern. A broad regional range does not mean local dry habitats are immune to land conversion or collection, and commercial inventory is not evidence of wild-population status.
